Welcome letter from NoVAGO’s president

Welcome letter from NoVAGO’s president

We have so much to look forward to this year!

First up is our spring picnic, which is always a fantastic time for everyone to come together and enjoy some geocaching fun with friends! We’re still finalizing the date, but we’ll have it for you soon. Plus, there are two great reasons to mark your calendars: cache awards and pathtags!

Every year at our spring picnic, we honor the best geocaches from the previous year with an award ceremony. Our awesome volunteers, Schwandt and MrPsyduck, will be leading the cache awards committee again this year. Keep an eye out for their announcements in the coming weeks for your chance to nominate your favorite caches in the area. Your input is essential, so stay tuned on our website or Facebook group for updates!

Last year, we reached out to you for new club pathtag design submissions. We had five fantastic designs to choose from, and after a very close tie in the voting, Awesnap’s design came out on top! The board is already working on ordering a new batch, and we’re aiming to have them available for sale at the spring picnic—how exciting!

Looking ahead to the fall, we can’t forget about our regular fall picnic, which features our much-loved silent auction. This event serves as our biggest fundraiser of the year and helps support our activities throughout the year. So, as you go about your days leading up to it, keep an eye out for items that could be popular and consider making a donation!

Also, the Geocaching International Film Festival is returning in November!

And beyond Northern Virginia, many of us are eagerly anticipating GeoWoodstock in Morgantown, West Virginia, happening over Memorial Day weekend. Event registration packages are available until the end of THIS MONTH, so be sure to grab yours soon! Also, in September, we’ll be Celebrating 25 years of Geocaching in the DMV, a little north of Frederick, Maryland. Don’t forget to log your will-attend for these events (and any others you plan to join) as soon as possible so organizers can plan accordingly.

Lastly, our Photo of the Month contest from last year has produced eleven amazing pictures that will compete for Photo of the Year! It’s going to be a tough choice! We’re planning to keep the contest running in 2025 as well. Remember, the entire contest takes place in the ‘Members Only’ section of our website, and you’ll need to be logged in to join in. Feel free to upload your photos along with a description of how they relate to your geocaching adventures. At the end of each month, we’ll get to vote on our favorites!

All these great activities happen thanks to our amazing volunteers. If you haven’t yet, please check out the Thanks 2024 !! A Community Celebration Event page and see a list of the wonderful people who helped out last year. Every little bit of help is really appreciated!

I want to take a moment to recognize the efforts of our 2024 officers and introduce your officers for 2025. For those who don’t know, I served as the public relations officer last year. Freddie was our fantastic treasurer, and Monica did a great job as our secretary, keeping everything organized. We were also fortunate to have two experienced presidents leading us: ThompsonKickers returned for her second year as president, and RufnRedy, who is the first president of NoVAGO, stepped in as vice president while also helping out with the website committee.

Now, let me introduce your 2025 board: Monica is coming back this year in a new role as public relations officer, and she’s really diving right in—I believe she will do an excellent job. Freddie will continue as treasurer, which is great since we need consistency in managing our finances. Gab Sedor of Sedor18 has moved up from being a Director to our new secretary. CherokeeThree has also advanced from Director to officer and will take on the role of vice president. I’m honored and excited to be your president for 2025!

Hope to see you on the caching trail!

~ Heather
