Why It Is Important to Follow Park Rules

Park Hours *** Parking Restrictions *** Do Not Enter *** No Littering *** No Dogs Allowed *** Dogs Must Remain On Leash *** Kids Must Remain On Leash (JUST KIDDING) *** No Hunting *** No Digging For Artifacts

As geocachers we want to be part of the solution, and not part of the problem.  The rules that parks establish, whether local, county, state, or federal parks and lands rules, are mainly implemented for safety reasons, either for the public, or the safety and conservation of the park (such as human-caused erosion) or its inhabitants (both flora and fauna).  It’s not uncommon for parks and similar lands to carry out special conservation projects, such as hunting seasons, planting of fragile flora, and creation of endangered species’ sanctuaries.  So it’s to everyone’s benefit that park rules are implemented, and that we follow them.

Cache owners sometimes identify key park rules or restrictions in the cache page’s description, such as park hours or parking restrictions.  But even if they don’t, it’s important that we are observant of park signs at the park entrance, around parking lots, and throughout the park.  Take time to read both the cache description and park signs.  Additionally many park authorities, big and small, post their rules on their website.

Geocachers have a tendency to park as close as possible to ground zero for a cache, but it’s important that we don’t ignore “No Parking” signs and other signs that restrict access to motor vehicles, such as “Authorized Vehicles Only Beyond This Point”, even if it is a serviceable road.  Obey the signs, park legally, and enjoy the journey to your cache objective.

Once forewarned, it’s important that we follow all the rules for our own safety and the safety and conservation of the park.

In addition to safety and conservation concerns, not obeying park rules reflect poorly on our cherished activity of Geocaching, and could have long-term negative consequences for all geocachers.  Park authorities may decide to remove existing caches; prevent additional caches from being placed; and expand restrictions to other parks and lands.

Just like laws everywhere, even if we’re not being watched, it’s important that we obey all park rules. The rules are for our benefit and the benefit of the parks and lands we  enjoy and help to steward.  We need to take our stewardship duties seriously, so please do your part to help.
