Don’t be afraid to reach out to a cache owner.

When and how to reach out to a CO and how it benefits the greater geocaching community.  Many years ago when I was training as an engineer, it was commonplace to see technical drawings stamped ‘If In Doubt Ask!‘. Most seasoned cachers believe in this adage and will message Cache Owners (CO’s) for advice and guidance when stuck on a puzzle or at a particularly evil cache hide. CO’s are usually very willing to provide a “nudge” and it isn’t uncommon for them to be so eager to help that they will jump in their car and race out to meet a cacher in distress! To contact the CO, go to the top of the caching page for that GC number and click “message this owner”. The Message Center page will open automatically and will start your message by showing the Title and GC number for that cache. Don’t forget … Continue reading

NoVAGO’s 2022 Fall Picnic

The 2022 NoVAGO Fall Picnic & Auction was held last weekend on October 22, 2022 at Claude Moore Park in Sterling. It was a Community Celebration Event (extended due to the pandemic.) The weather was perfect for the event and a good time was had by all. Three new Adventure Labs popped in the park during the event: NOVAGO PAST – History of the Organization, by TrexM8s, a tribute to those before us. NOVAGO NOW, by ThompsonKickers, a wonderful introduction to the organization, playable all around its geographic range. NOVAGO FUTURE – Geocaching in the Space Age, by MrPsyduck, a fun, kid-friendly, fictional tour of the nearby museum grounds with future geocacher, Elroy Jetson in 2062. An easy puzzle cache, NOVAGO 2022 Fall Picnic Icebreaker, published in the park towards the end of the event. Those that completed the fun icebreaker activity got to skip the puzzle and find the cache … Continue reading

Caching the Capital Region and Beyond Adventure Lab

Since 2006 the Northern Virginia Geocaching Organization has had “Caching the Capital Region and Beyond” in our crest. NoVAGO was recently awarded 10 new Adventure Labs and has opted to place them around the District of Columbia. With this latest Adventure Lab we strive to take cachers into the District to show off a few things they may have missed during past visits. During a test run of these we found that grabbing most of these easily done by those red DC Bikeshare bicycles.  None of these 10 labs require admission fees, security check points, or to go inside any buildings.  Only three of these are not available 24/7 and you can find those posted hours on the lab pages. NoVAGO want’s our community to cache with confidence and has permission for all virtual placements. On 11JUL19 the National Mall and Memorial Parks supervisors noted: “As long as nothing is … Continue reading
