Geocaching.com outage on 28 July 2010

Postby TooWheelIn » Mon Jul 26, 2010 5:28 pm

For those of you who may not have seen the "Red Banner" on GC.Com...the site will be down for maintenance & update Wednesday (July 28th) late afternoon/early evening our time. The banner reads:

Geocaching.com will be going offline temporarily for a site update on Wednesday, July 28th at approximately 1pm PDT (GMT -7). We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Yup, saw the banner. Now I'm eagerly awaiting to see what they mess up this time. :brick:

I hope the maps on the cache description pages start working again. Boy is that annoying.

Yes, fixing the cache page maps would be nice, and I'd also like to "see" them fix the "invisible factor" for caches on an Ignore List. One of the past site upgrades now makes it impossible to see any cache that is on the Ignore List...can't tell when someone logs one (important to me for Milestone monitoring), and not only that..ignored caches do not even appear in the Profile of the CO. Sure...it's a given that I don't hunt many Puzzle Caches, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see them, or read the logs on the brainiacs who solve and find them.

Oh yeah, one other thing. For those of you who have established Bookmarks...it is now possible to delete an entire Bookmark with a simple push of the "Delete" button...but DO NOT do it before you first bulk delete every cache that you have listed in that Bookmark. If you delete the Bookmark without deleting the cache first...the Bookmark will disappear, but you will continue to receive notification posts on/from every cache that you had listed....now that could be VERY annoying! I'd like to see that fixed too with the next site release too.

I use a geocoin to track my miles as I am sure many of us do. Ever since the last update posting my found logs has become extremely slow. I've noticed that if I post a DNF or note or any log type other than Found (Attended) the log posts within 1 - 5 seconds. However my found logs routinely take up to 30 seconds to post. So I am left staring at the monitor until the page updates. The only difference I see between these log types it that my Found (Attended) logs have a geocoin (or travel bug) attached to them. So it appears that the loging system for trackables has been changed in such a way that it takes much longer for the servers to record it.

Furthermore since the last update I have noticed that the trackable pages will not display the miles moved for a trackable if that milage is less than one mile. The system does compute the distance since it appears in the total miles traveled, it jyst doesn't display it on the right side of the log like it always did in the past. This is an annoyance to me because I like to see just how far my personal mile-tracking geocoin moves between each cache I visit. Usine the "Recalculate Distance" option does not have any effect.

Little annoying changes. I can't wait until next week when I have to manually calculate at least 150 geocoin moves by measuring the distance on Google Earth.

 Hmmmm, the delay you mention seems strange...I am not experiencing that at all...even when logging a geocoin, or any trackable for that matter. I haven't seen the mileage problem, but then I don't always log my "mileage counter" geocoin for every cache...usually only if there is significant mileage (5 miles or more). Hopefully, the new site update will address those, and many of the other problems. Guess we'll find out tomorrow evening. No emoticon for "crossing fingers", so I guess we'll just have to

Hey Nemo,
What are you doing on virtuals and Earthcaches? you can't dip a coin in them any more either.

I've had no problems dipping into Virtuals. Last Virt. I logged was on July 15th and it accepted the coin drop just fine.

As for Earthcaches, I've never been able to dip there so I've gotten used to it. I usually log something else close by anyway so get some idea of the miles.

You cannot dip into Webcams either.

They did fix those maps a few weeks ago, although I have noticed one particular cache where the map on the page won't load for me.

I wasn't aware of that bookmark delete problem, but wow that is a doozy. Have to wonder how much testing they do before blessing an enhancement.

I don't think they do very much (testing)...why should they :smt102 -- they (like Garmin) have the greatest team of Beta Testers in the world.....Us
