Now HERE is a Power Trail!!!

Postby TooWheelIn » Tue Mar 09, 2010 8:15 pm

Came across a discussion in the Groundspeak Forums regarding Power Trails, so I took a look at the cache string being discussed. Holey Moley...it's in the Mojave Desert, along a power company road (named Powerline Road)...kind of catchy the way this all ties together, eh? It looks like they were all published on March 6th....and by all....I mean 618 of them, spaced between 0.1 miles and 0.2 miles apart. Here's a link to the NGA (Nevada Geocaching Assoc) profile for caches placed: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest. ... b257&u=NGA

Or you can do a search for GC24R9H (it's named Baku, and is just about in the middle of the string). Look at Google maps from the cache page, or better yet - go to Google Earth and zoom out a bit, then refresh the KML file  . I wouldn't think of doing it...wouldn't be able to write a decent log for all 618 of them (of course they probably don't deserve a decent log :defiant:). However, now that I've more or less planted the seed...who among you might just take a detour on your way to GeoWoodstock in Washington? Now to wrap this all up...get your high clearance 4X4, pack a LOT of water, 3 or 4 Jerry Cans of gasoline, a long days rations...and you have yourself a real "Day Trip".

P.S. For you FTF hounds...all but about half a dozen of them remain Unfound as of this typing.

Strike that P.S. - someone (actually 2 someones) are busily logging. Their last entry listed a "WooHoo 154 FTF's in one day" :smt103

8O Oh that's just ridiculous. You can't even view the entire trail at one time on the map (Search exceeds 500 caches). Looks to me like someone is preparing to hide a Quincentennial challenge - log 500 caches in one day. Or maybe a Sexcentennial - 600 caches.

I'm still trying to come to terms with the idea of logging 100 in a day. I'll do it this year for sure!

looks like a fine time to fly to Vegas and rent a Jeep and get caching! 3 day weekend should put a huge dent in it!

What I find cool about this new PT in the making is that I have cache finds on each side of the PT (northwest/southest). That's pretty cool.

I don't think you can 4x4 powerline trails fast enough to hit 500 in a day. You can hardly get up to speed before you are rock hopping, stopping, poking it with a stick, waiting for the snake or scorpion to strike, nab the cache, sign the log, put it back, and do it all over again. You could probably do 100 no problem though... ;)

Michael: I would assume that you would already be planning a trip out there!! Requires a rubber stamp and some computer code. Seems like there ought to be a way to batch-load cache entries. Is there a Paperwork Reduction Act for geocaching?

 Rubber Stamp, now there's an idea, one of those ink-impregnated kind.

I've considered using Avery return-address lables and printing the date and my caching name on an entire sheet for those BIG days.

Some cache owners (especially in the TN area) don't allow stickers to be used as an alternative to a signature, due to the rampant log cheating that occurred in the area.

Plus, the stickers take up log space, and make the log sheet difficult to fold, especially on the nano's.
