Globalcaching on "The Forgotten" ABC 9 Mar 10

Interesting how geocaching has worked it's way into story lines for mainstream television shows. "The Forgotten" broadcasting right now (10PM on ABC) is following a plot to locate a killer who is placing caches to leave taunts, clues. You should have seen the ammo box 8O. The show is calling the game "Globalcaching" vs Geocaching, but it very closely follows the theme of our pastime...right down to a website with on-line logs, trade items, puzzles, etc. Yeah interesting.

Nothing like having this activity portrayed in a positive light, eh?

Geeks and serial killers, step right up.... listen closely and you can hear the Death Knell Toll!!!!

I dread the day that some "inspired" psychopath will start leaving pieces of dismembered victims in geocaches. That's right up there with terrorists leaving real bombs that have been camo'd to look like geocaches. Probably won't be long until that idea is also used in a prime time crime show.

I suspect this is a pretty low threat. Consider the audience - geocachers make up like less than 1% of the population - A terrorist would be looking for much larger scare effect - like targeting an area which more people interact (church, school, grocery). I am guessing that geocaches are way down such lists - and are on par with those locations when considered against ease of access.

It also does not make sense to fear terrorist will disguise a bomb as a cache. This would assume that a large portion of the population knows what a cache is and will ignore it. We all know THAT doesn't happen. Tie a match container to a tree in any poplulated parking area and dollars to doughnuts you will have a crowd arround it within 15 minutes wondering "what is that thing?" Then in 30 minutes, some guy will think it's cool to take it... Not a good scenario to a mad bomber...

As to what a psycho will do - well - they are by definition irrational - thus the name. Case in point - Vinny&Sue!

the only people you might be trying to fool with a bomb are LEOs -- and they might be lulled into thinking something that looked like a geocache was probably another PITA false alarm....
